Visiting the MIT Senseable City Lab

by Till Nagel.

For a half-year sabbatical, I am visiting the MIT Senseable City Lab. Since September I am staying with the lab in Cambridge, MA, and will travel to Singapore after the Visweek conference to work on the Live Singapore project. The objective of the project is to give people visual and tangible access to real-time information about their city.

I am going to create interactive visualizations for urban data, and investigate how accessible geo-visualizations empower citizens to participate in the discovery and analysis of information referring to their environment. One focus is to make citizen aware of all the hidden data layers, to enable them exploring their digital city, and to eventually stimulate an informed debate.

I am going to draw on findings extracted and described within my prior research works, and further investigate how they can be applied in different contexts. I am going to adapt interaction techniques and visualization methods to the concepts of “Live Singapore”, and refine them for the specific real-time data sets, therein.
